45. Harper’s Ferry, WV
Why go: West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland meet in Harper’s Ferry, which also happens to be the midpoint of the 2,200-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Hike the four miles that pass through town to see the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and the picturesque colors there. Then, head into Harpers Ferry National Historical Park for more adventures like kayaking, rafting, and rock climbing.
Where to stay: The Town’s Inn is right in the middle of the historic district and steps from the rivers, trails, and train station. It’s cozy and quaint, with rooms taking up two neighboring pre–Civil War residences.
