New Hampshire: Bode Miller’s Secret Swimming Hole
Native son and Olympic gold medalist Bode Miller knows how to cool down after mountain biking through the White Mountains’ vast network of trails: “There’s a swimming hole only locals know about called Upper Ammonoosuc Falls, near my house in Bretton Woods,” says Miller. “You go straight from the restaurant Fabyan’s Station, then the road branches off on Route 302. It continues on to the old Cog Railway and dead-ends. Through the woods is this awesome gorge with a 30-foot drop that’s all granite. Its been carved out by the river and it’s really cold, fresh, superclean runoff. Everyone jumps off into the water, doing flips. There’s some sketchy stuff too, rocks you have to jump. People get hurt, but I never have.”
Getting there: From Portland, Maine, drive 100 miles to Bretton Woods. Then take Route 302 to Fabyan’s and turn north on Base Road, leading to the Cog Railroad. Look for a wide dirt spot on the right side of the road about 2.3 miles from the Route 302 intersection. There is a short trail leading to the footbridge over the falls.
