17. Oakland, CAGet More Info
Why go: Oakland—just outside of San Francisco on the inner part of the bay area—was recently named one of National Geographic’s Must-See Places in 2019. And just like in SF, you probably aren’t going to overheat here in the summer. Basing yourself in Oakland means dealing with fewer tourists than in the city as you roam the repurposed shipyards, car dealerships, and warehouses, which have been turned into breweries and wineries.
Where to stay: The recently renovated Waterfront Hotel in Jack London Square is offering an awesome Sail the Bay package this summer: In partnership with local company Whales Tails, guests who book a two-night stay (or more) can reserve a private sailing experience on the bay.
