21. Redding, CAGet More Info
Why go: The Shasta Cascade Region, about three hours north of San Francisco, is known as California’s last frontier. In the summer, you can truly max out the remote area’s best attractions, including 225 miles of trails within a 15-mile radius of downtown Redding, the hub of the area; 50 waterfalls; dozens of lakes, rivers, mountains; six national forests; and seven state parks, including the active Lassen Volcanic National Park.
Where to stay: The Sheraton Redding Hotel sits right next to the iconic Sundial Bridge, which spans the Sacramento River. It’s actually a part of the 300-acre Turtle Bay Exploration Park (there’s a private entrance from the hotel), and the property returns 100 percent of its profits to the non-profit park.
