32. San Juan, WAGet More Info
Why go: The San Juan Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Washington, are to the Pacific Northwest what Cape Cod is to New England: the quintessential summer escape. It’s also only accessible by ferry or seaplane. Temps may be cool—between 67 and 71 degrees, on average—but you’ll get half the rainfall of nearby Seattle, making it an ideal environment for beach hiking, kayaking, and whale watching.
Where to stay: Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes is surrounded by Neva Lake, Dream Lake, and Fish Hook Lake, hence the name. It sits on 82 wooded acres just outside of Friday Harbor. Tucked into the forest near Fish Hook Lake are seven 425-square-foot yurts, each with a private deck that holds a hot tub, BBQ, and Adirondack chairs. Take in the scenery. It’s an oasis.
