6. If you can, eat only cooked foods
The night after leaving the clinic, as well as the next day, I was relegated to stomach-friendly foods—namely soup, Jell-O, and toast. I was advised not to eat dairy, fatty or fried foods, spices, alcohol, and caffeine. I was also mindful of foods that often harbor salmonella: raw or partially cooked eggs, meat, poultry, and seafood, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. It sucks to go to a new country and automatically omit foods that harbor the highest risk of food poisoning, but if you’re doing something particularly active, then it’s better to be safe.
