Black Hills, South Dakota
Give your drone freedom to explore the wide-open spaces in Custer State Park. It can swoop up aerial footage of pine forests, mountain streams, and granite peaks. Pack your Go-Pro camera, too, so you can get good shots of wildlife — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife advises not approaching animals or birds vertically with drones. Also, don’t launch your unmanned aircraft within 330 feet of wildlife. Custer State Park is famous for its herd of 1,300 bison that roam about freely. (Make the trip here in September and feel the thunder of an annual buffalo round-up.) While at the park, you’ll also likely come across antelope, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, deer, elk, wild turkeys, and burros to round-out your own nature documentary.
In your downtime: While in town, try out fly fishing in Spearfish Creek, known for its population of wild rainbow trout.
