The Disaster: For residents, it seems that this Caribbean island has endured a disproportionate number of disasters over the last ten years. Six hurricanes, numerous floods, and one large earthquake have highlighted the biggest problems — a lack of decent infrastructure and the rampant poverty in the region. When a cluster of storms passed over the country in early November, causing widespread flooding and displacing thousands, the residents of this island did what they do best — dig out and start rebuilding. The hardest hit area was the city of Cap-Haitien with over 6,000 homes flooded.
The State of Recovery: An estimated 10 to 20 percent of the population is still displaced and the American Red Cross has been coordinating efforts to bring fresh water and temporary housing to the country.
