Before Adam Scott became the first Aussie to win the Masters Tournament, the 32-year-old tour favorite was already considering where he might take his victory lap. Back home in his native Austrailia, he likes to get out and go. That’s why he relishes driving the two hours north from where he lives on Austrailia’s Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast and frequently pushes on toward Queensland’s renowned Fraser Island. The only downside of the trip for Scott is that the M1 Pacific Motorway has speed cameras that, true to national custom, strictly enforce speed limits of 100-110 km/h (or 62-68 mph).

“The speed I would like to go,” Scott says, “and the speed we are allowed to go are two very different things.”

The now third-ranked golfer in the world – and the only player from Down Under in the top 35 – was born in Adelaide and won the Australian Masters’ gold jacket last November. Now that he’s got the green jacket as well, he’s got the perfect wardrobe for his jaunts. He could admire it the cut of a lapel in the rearview while cranking Kings of Leon and the like from an iPod plugged into the GL450 Mercedes-Benz SUV he uses to accomodate the surfboards and clubs he can’t fit into the SLS AMG Roadster he upgraded to from Mercedes SL550 after signing on as a spokesperson for the German automaker. If he sticks to the plans he made before his big win, he might even take a detour to see the colorful cliffs at Rainbow Beach, which the third-ranked golfer in the world describes as “a beautiful spot to drive past” and carefully fold the jacket up before heading out into the waves.

This region of Australia, known for both its beaches and the charming towns that keep them company, has long attracted savvy travelers looking to experience California circa the sixties. Gold Coast’s laid back vibe is reminiscent of San Diego and Sunshine Coast brings to mind Santa Barbara.

No matter how famous he gets, Scott promises that he will always come back. “That is still my home base,” he says, “where I get to at the end of every year.”
