Instead of the Dominican Republic go to Haiti
For nightlife that out-edges Punta Cana and a rebounding tourism scene bolstered by the thousands of ex-pat aid workers that flooded the island after the earthquake, Haiti is emerging as Caribbean’s next under the radar escape. The nightlife is a particular draw says Steve Bennett, who runs the travel website Uncommon Caribbean. Bennett points to Brasserie Quartier Latin in Port-au-Prince’s cosmopolitan suburb, Petionville, as the spot to see great Cuban salsa bands performs. And on Thursday nights, he says, head to Hotel Oloffson to hear the house band, RAM perform vodou rock for an international crowd. About 90 minutes south of Port-au-Prince, fronting a beautiful bay on Haiti’s southern coast, Jacmel is the island’s most stylish beach burg and home to a classic and well priced Caribbean beach hotel, Hotel Cyvadier Plage.
