Bronx River (New York, NY)
There’s no denying that free (yes, no cost) kayaking on the Hudson and East River is a momentary thrill worth experiencing. But if you’ve got 30 bucks and three hours, the best Big Apple paddle is with the Bronx River Alliance. It offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the city of New York. Though the Upper River tour starts in the heart of the borough at 219th St. and Bronx Blvd, it won’t be long before you’re churning down the Bronx River amidst a lush urban sanctuary as you pass by the Bronx Zoo, Bronx River Forest and under a canopy of trees in a seemingly secret passage through the New York Botanical Gardens. Bronx River Alliance’s education coordinator Kathalene Lamboy says this exclusive trip is a chance for locals and tourists to see the “borough in a new light.” Call to request a kayak as many of the outings are by canoe.
