Washougal River (Portland, OR)
If you want bald eagles, skyline views, and a relaxing splash on the Willamette River, book the Ross Island Tour (pictured, $45) with Portland Kayak Company. That’s not where the pros will be, however. Russ Pascoe, Oregon Kayak and Canoe Club president, says the run lies just beyond downtown, across the state line in Washington. On the Washougal River, expect Class II to V rapids with enough tricky S-turns and fast stretches along with mild whitewater to make it a fun trip for both advanced and moderate paddlers. Drop in below a Class IV boulder garden called “Big Eddy” at around mile seven and finish at mile three, filled with a wave of pride and a craving for an egg potato patty with a side of pork belly at nearby OurBar.
