Rancho Valencia: San Diego, CA
One of the fittest cities in America, San Diego is virtually one giant outdoor gym for those who like to hike, climb, run, bike and swim—but guests at the ultra-classy Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa can get in a workout without having to step off the property. The luxury resort—in one of the most expensive zip codes in America—offers an expansive fitness center and program (recently part of a $30-million renovation), which now includes a spin studio and open-air, floating-dock yoga pavilion that doubles up for fitness classes. The resort also offers Pilates, TRX classes, hikes, tennis, and sports massages. Its Lifewellness Institute helps guests immerse in overall wellness. Rancho Valencia has also become a magnet for avid cyclists, thanks to their well-known cycling retreats led by notable names in the field (from Olympian Andy Potts to American Tour de France veteran Christian Vande Velde). It doesn’t come cheap, though: A full-access membership will run you $372 a month (plus a $5,500 initiation fee).
