34. Salt Lake City, Utah
Why go: There’s so much more to Salt Lake City, UT, than the Sundance Film Festival. Beyond that crazy week at the end of January, Salt Lake goes ham on every winter activity all-season long: Nearby ski resorts include Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude Mountain Resort, Park City Mountain, and Deer Valley. Those same mountains have acres upon acres of national forest for backcountry skiing, and there’s an 800-mile network of groomed snowmobile trails in the region. Tubing’s also huge here. Catch a ride at Soldier Hollow in the Wasatch Mountain State Park, which has the longest tubing lanes in Utah at 1,200 feet.
Where to stay: Housing may be scarce during Sundance, but there are plenty of options during the rest of the season. You can’t go wrong at Kimpton’s boutique Hotel Monaco, which is in a historic bank building. It’s a half-block from the city’s ski shuttles and serves up a free nightly wine tasting. Or go luxe with Montage Deer Valley. It has ski-in, ski-out access, the largest spa in Utah, and a prime location just five minutes from Main Street.
