38. Sugarloaf, Maine
Why go: In the middle of Maine’s Western Mountains (a four-hour drive from Boston), Sugarloaf Mountain is the largest ski area east of the Rockies, with 160 trails over 1,240 skiable acres. It’s also the only ski resort in the Northeast with lifts that take skiers above the treeline. And it has a longer ski season than Breckenridge, running from mid-November to early May. It also gets an average of 200 inches of snowfall per year—not too shabby for the east coast!
Where to stay: The Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel is a rustic ski resort hotel, with one chairlift just 150 feet away from the door. Make sure to bring all your friends—there’s a custom 30-person hot tub on the property.
