39. Canoe Bay, Wisconsin
Why go: Canoe Bay’s 300 acres of private forest—near the small town of Chetek—feel totally isolated, but they’re still within driving distance from Eau Claire, Chicago, and Minneapolis. Fun fact: The resort only provides directions once a reservation has been made to maintain its seclusion. The North Woods itself is delightful, but there are cross-country ski trails 25 minutes away in the Blue Hills and downhill 25 minutes away at Christie Mountain.
Where to stay: Once an abandoned religious retreat, Canoe Bay’s old camp buildings were remodeled before the owners added new cottages, ranging from 400 square feet to 2,000 square feet (it’s now the only Relais & Chateau property in the Midwest). The best part: No kids allowed.
