50. Sandia Mountains, New Mexico
Why go: New Mexico seems like another unlikely spot to indulge your need for adventure come winter, but Sandia Peak is one of the easiest ski resorts to access from a major city: It’s a 45-minute drive from the Albuquerque metro area. Whether you ski or not, you have to take a ride across the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway. The 60-person aerial tram covers 2.7 miles, giving you panoramic views of the Rio Grande Valley.
Where to stay: Come down from the mountain for a stay at Hotel Parc Central, which was once a hospital. Now, it has an awesome rooftop bar where you can enjoy Prohibition-themed cocktails and views of the city and Sandia Mountains.
