Now, this is a cruise we can get behind. Aqua Expeditions, the luxury travel cruise company, has partnered with Jean-Michel Cousteau (the other son of famed ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau) to create a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience cruising down the Mekong and Amazon rivers in South America and Southeast Asia.
Cousteau has collaborated with Aqua to create itineraries that focus on the ecosystems travelers will be surrounded by during their cruises, so they can see and explore from the perspective of a conservationist. And since the capacity for each trip is limited, every passenger will get the opportunity to get to know Cousteau personally through daily excursions and evening talks with Cousteau that will include screenings of several of his films.
“The idea of traveling to some of the largest water systems in the world, including the Amazon and Mekong rivers, evokes a feeling of adventure, exotic beauty, and remoteness," says Cousteau. “My hope is to inspire Aqua Expeditions’ passengers to appreciate at an emotional and intellectual level on how we are a part of one global water system.”
The cruises are running on set dates in 2017 and 2018, with schedules as follows:
September 15–22, 2017
Siem Reap, Cambodia, to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
February 23–March 2, 2018
Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
September 14–21, 2018
Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, to Siem Reap, Cambodia
February 9–16, 2018
October 5–12, 2018
Spots on the cruises are limited (max capacity for each Amazon trip is 32 passengers, while Mekong is 40), so expect bookings to go fast. And if you’re looking to scoop up a ticket for yourself, you’re going to need a little more than pocket change at your disposal. Rates for these voyages start at $11,150 (based on double occupancy).
“It’s rare to find such opportunities in such intimate settings and surrounded by such a fitting location,” Francesco Galli Zugaro, founder and CEO of Aqua Expeditions, says. “The lucky few will come away appreciating the fragile ecosystem we will visit and be encouraged by the passion that has driven a family to make such a push to dedicate their entire existence to protecting the bodies of water that we take for granted.”
