Backpack in a Place No One’s Heard Of
The 310-mile Superior Hiking Trail follows the northern shoreline of Lake Superior from Duluth, Minnesota, to the Canadian Border. Scaling that down for a weekend, a favorite route is Crosby-Manitou State Park to Britton Peak (30 miles). Trails wend through various state parks and some private land, and they’re rugged, but with spectacular views. Crosby-Manitou has plenty of waterfalls, and be alert on the trail for wildlife, including bears.
On your way to Crosby-Manitou, stop in the small city of Hanson for breakfast at Lou’s Rustic Diner. It’s small, but we hear the potato cakes are fantastic. On your way home, take a break in Duluth to hit the Bent Paddle Brewery for its award-winning ESB amber ale.Back to top
