El Niño Prediction: It's shaping up to be a light snow year, but just one good storm cycle could change this dramatically.
"Northern Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana could get the short end of the stick this season," says Gratz. "The predominant southerly storm track prevalent in El Niño skips right by the Northern Rockies and usually means below-average snowfalls and way-above-average temperatures." Forecasters predict a dry and mild start to winter, and while by February and into March a few major storms will come, it is looking like a late start and short-lived winter up North this season. "There will definitely be some good days," Gratz says, "but it might take some patience."
