El Niño Prediction: Endless Snow! (Maybe) But the Southwest is shaping up to see one of their best years ever.
"This is the odds on favorite for a long and deep winter this year," says Gratz. "The Southern Rockies are set to receive abundant rain and snow." Cooler temps, lots of moisture, and a favorable jet stream could create record-breaking snowfall, especially in Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern Utah. "Colorado is an interesting beast," says Gratz. "The southern mountains will see lots of snow, but, overall, El Niño correlations to deep snow throughout the state isn't super strong." Colorado did have one of its wettest springs on record, so if that pattern continues, it could be a banner year across Colorado. And if the jet stream shifts up a smidgen, Utah's Wasatch region will reap the rewards of multiday storms with snowfall totals in the canyons measured in feet.
