El Niño Prediction: Lots of moisture across California. The concern is: rain or snow?
Powder starved and drought stricken. “There will definitely be plenty of moisture,” Gratz says, “but the wildcard will be temperature gradient and the southern jet stream.” If the storms come ashore exceptionally warm, which is a possibility given the extremely warm ocean temperatures offshore during this El Niño year, then resorts across California and Oregon will suffer the same fate as last year, with rain falling up to 8,000 or even 9,000 feet. If it stays cooler, a potential snow bonanza is likely, lighting up resorts from Southern California through Nevada, Northern California, and Oregon.
