Board an Antarctic cruise in Ushuaia, Argentina
This once inaccessible mass of rock, ice, and penguins is now open to everyday tourists for a small window during the Southern Hemisphere summer (November to March). At that time as many as 46,000 people see the land aboard luxury liners from adventure companies like Lindblad and Quark Expeditions. Sailings typically offer a variety of excursions, including paddleboarding and kayaking, which promise close contact with the penguins, skuas, and leopard seals (but not too close to these).
How to get here: Fly into Ushuaia International Airport (via Buenos Aires) and board one of the many roundtrip cruises to Antarctica.
