Ski Down a Volcano in Ruapehu, New Zealand
Is it active? Very. Does it erupt sometimes? Absolutely. But it’s also worth the risk. Mount Ruapahu is no gimmick for skiers in search of a brush with danger. It’s actually the top winter sports destination on New Zealand’s perpetually rumbling North Island, offering two “ski fields” and more than 100 runs and views of nearby “Mount Doom” (from “The Lord of the Rings” fame). Most visitors use the tiny town of Ohakune below as an arpes hub and journey up the volcano each day to tempt fate.
How to get here: Fly into Auckland and take a bus or train four hours south to Ohakune.
