Desierto de Los Leones
For a less vertical, but more culturally rich, hike, check out to Mexico City’s western boundary, to Desierto de Los Leones, the country’s first national park. Carmelite Monks built a monastery there more than 400 years ago, and hermitages built to accompany the monastery are still scattered around the park. At 8,500 feet, the park, like much of the region, already is up in the nosebleeds. Elevation seekers can aim higher though, with Cerro San Miguel, the park’s tallest peak, at 12,000 feet.
Directions: This national park lies less than an hour southwest of downtown. While there are mountains you can scramble up, this is a more low-key trip than the other mountains on this list — consider it more of a day outdoors.
