Surf World-Famous Waves and Party Until the Sun Comes Up in Bali
You probably already know Bali as one of the world’s premier surf destinations. It also has a night life that puts Vegas to shame. Book a room at the Uluwatu Surf Villas, near the spectacular temple Pura Uluwatu. These serene, thatched-roof cottages located on the Bukit Peninsula, are perched on top of cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean’s world-class breaks. Plus, they are close enough to the action that you can basically surf home. At night, head to one of the Island’s super clubs like Mirror Lounge and Club, a former Gothic cathedral boasting international DJs. Stay up until first light at 6 a.m. to catch the Racetrack break, which is particularly good at low-tide.
Ski and Get Stoned in Telluride, Colorado’s Pot-Friendliest Town
Telluride, Colorado, with some of the gnarliest skiable terrain in the United States, and the friendliest marijuana politics, is a perfect spring break trip for skiing or riding all day and getting baked at night. Start your journey at 9 a.m., when lifts open, and follow the locals straight up to the mountain’s Gold Hill and Revelation Bowl lifts, where you can lap expert terrain at 12,225 feet. End the day on the front of the mountain on the steep, groomed black runs like Bushwacker, Plunge, and Coonskin. Finish your day by skiing into town, where within moments of snapping off your skis you will be steps away from the Telluride Green Room. In this stoner’s paradise, you will find pre-rolled joints, vape pens, and a rainbow of edible confections.
Bike, Drink Craft Beer, and Check Out an Ethical (and All-Nude) Strip Club in Portland
Portland, Oregon is known for its insane number of craft breweries (105 at last count), bike accessibility, and strip clubs (the most per capita in the country). What more could you need? We suggest starting out healthy and wholesome by heading to the nearby town of Champoeg for a ride through the Willamette Valley, where you’ll pass hop fields and vineyards. Then, begin your beer tour. Must-sees include Hair of the Dog (order an Adam), Cascade Barrel Brewing House (try the Apricot Ale), and Horse Brass Pub (a stout and a shot will do). Deschutes and Rogue are also in town — it’s frankly hard to go wrong on your crawl. Then check out Casa Diablo, billed as the world’s first vegan gentleman’s club, where the kitchen serves vegan samosas and the dancers remove animal product–free G-strings (really).
Hike Machu Picchu and Try Ayahuasca in Cusco Peru
If you’re able to swing a far-flung break, look to Cusco, Peru, and scratch off two bucket-list items with one flight. In Cusco, you can both hike the Incan citadel Machu Picchu, as well as try Ayahuasca, the psychedelic trip that is having its moment. For a traditional journey, get a permit to hike the Inca Trail, following the path that the indigenous people would have taken from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu. Or for something more strenuous, check out the Vilcabamba trek, a quiet, remote trail, passing snow-capped mountains and well-preserved Inca trails. At the end of your physical journey, save time for a spiritual trek with an Ayahuasca shaman. Some travel groups like Etnikas Ayahuasca Retreats even offer packages combining both the Ayahuasca and Machu Picchu experience. Although not every experience is made the same, and make sure to research your adventure carefully.
