Don’t stay downtown.
The Organizing Committee is touting Sochi 2014 as the “most compact” Winter Games in the history of the event. Even so, events will be spread across two major hubs. The Coastal Cluster will sit in Adler, roughly 25 miles from downtown Sochi. This site will be home to ice hockey, speed skating, figure skating, curling, and both the opening and closing ceremonies. Just under 40 miles from downtown Sochi, in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana, you’ll find the Mountain Cluster. There, you’ll see the biathlon, snowboarding, bobsled, skeleton, luge, and every skiing event.
It will take 35 minutes to travel from one cluster to the other via a brand-new express train that is being built for the Games. Once within either cluster, you can easily get between venues by walking or taking ski lifts. Despite being relatively compact compared to previous Winter Games, this geographic spread will force visitors to be strategic about where the base themselves. Little will take place in downtown Sochi, so be sure to find accommodations either around Adler (Coastal Cluster) or Krasnaya Polyana (Mountain Cluster).Back to top
