How to Attend Lucha Libre School
If you’re looking to take your love of lucha to the next level, you’re in the right place. After all, not only do all great luchadores train in Mexico City, so did a few of the WWE’s greatest names like Vampiro, Mistico, and WWE Hall of Famer Lita.
The CMLL wrestling school, which was founded back in October 1933, is “the oldest breeding ground for professional wrestlers in Mexico.” So really, it’s as authentic as it gets.
Anyone can come and learn the true art of lucha libre wrestling. And you may even get to rub elbows with a few current luchadores including, Disturbance, The Mask and Bucanero King, who all currently train at the school.
Classes are open to the public and run Monday-Thursday and Saturdays. The only downside is that classes are bought by the month, so even if you only attend one class you have to buy an entire package. Saturday classes are $300 for a two-hour course. If you’re in town with a group of friends, CMLL is open to running a private session and pricing is available upon request.
In the class, participants will learn the basic principles of wrestling, including tumbling, falling, and moving around the ring. And, if you’re really invested in becoming a true luchador, you can. Those interested in making a major go at a career in lucha libre can take a few classes, then test out of the program with a comprehensive wrestling exam.
If you pass, you’ll be rewarded with a license as a professional wrestler, which is issued by the Wrestling Commission of Mexico City. After that, you can appear in any wrestling event endorsed by the country’s commissioning body. And wouldn’t becoming a professional wrestler be the ultimate way to end a three-day guys trip to Mexico City?
