How to Get Inside a Match
It’s both ridiculously cheap and ridiculously easy to get inside a lucha libre match. Tickets to a Sunday or Tuesday show will run you about $15, while a Friday night event (or special Saturday event at Arena Coliseo) will set you back just $20. You can purchase tickets ahead of time on Ticketmaster—which we recommend if you’re planning to attend with a large group, such as a bachelor party, so you can ensure you’re seated together—or just walk up to the arena 30 minutes before the show and purchase your tickets there. If you stay at Domingo Santo, their concierge will even buy your tickets for you when you book their lucha libre experience.
There are plenty of additional companies that can sweeten the experience for you, too. Mexico a Pie, for example, will take you for a quick guacamole and mezcal tasting before the show alongside a real former luchador. They’ll even grab your tickets in advance for you and throw in a lucha libre mask for good measure. Or, you could book an evening with a local guide on Airbnb Experiences. You’ll meet to review the history and rules of lucha over a few Mexican beers and traditional sweets. You’ll create your own lucha mask with your guide before heading over to the show. And really, at $50 a person, it’s a steal.
But, remember to save a few pesos—preferably small bills for a cerveza or two and some snacks, like Takis, popcorn, and cotton candy. Then, be prepared to scream your head off for the next two hours. It’s easy to get swept up in the fervor of lucha libre.
