Day Five: Courgenay to Basel, 35 Miles
For most of your time on Route 7, you’ll have been in the French-speaking region of Switzerland, but as you cruise toward Basel, you’ll notice a gradual shift toward German. You’ll have just a few small climbs and some rollers as the landscape shifts from country to city before you coast into town (it’s a net downhill day). As you get closer to Basel, the roads will become busier but remain safe. Even in the city the route follows wide, cycling-friendly avenues.
Where to stay: If you don’t want the trip to end, stop in Roggenburg for a night at the family-run Haus Neumühle. This bed-and-breakfast serves locavore cuisine and offers hiking and bird-watching out its back door. In Basel, splurge a bit and stay at the luxury Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois. Attentive staff, plush rooms, and luscious meals will assuage the pains of even the weariest cyclist.Back to top
