Day Two: Lac de Joux to Fleurier, 35 Miles
Today the real climbing begins. You’ll crest over your first true col or mountain, Col d’Aiguillon, before dropping into the village of Fleurier. Look for locals selling handmade cheeses in this area. A hearty wedge is the best fuel for a long day on the road.
If you are not afraid of adding a few extra miles to your day, take the four-mile detour to Sainte-Croix, home of the world’s first music box. Stop by the Music Box Museum (Musée Baud) or the Museum of Automation (Centre International de la Mécanique d’Art) to learn more than you every wanted to know about these musical machines.
Where to stay: If your legs are feeling heavy already and you want to break the day into two, stop at Hôtel Croix d’Or, a small but comfortable hotel in Ballaigues. In Fleurier, stay at the vintage Hotel de la Poste. Located in the center of town, this hotel has great rustic food and, since you’re getting close to absinthe country, a quiet absinthe bar.Back to top
