The following is a sampling of roads and towns that mean a great deal to me because of their peculiarities, and also in part because they yielded certain decisions that added to the vitality of my life as a writer. Looking my choices over closely, I can see that though they have a deep emotional resonance for me, they might not do the same thing for you. For instance, I adore North Dakota, but many find its emptiness appalling. The idea is that if you try a few of these, perhaps you’ll find places of your own.
