Live Among Locals
Rather than putting the whole thing in a single structure, scattered hotels offer a central hub for check-in, cocktails, and dining, but the rooms themselves are dispersed throughout a town or village. It adds up to the laidback, local feel of an Airbnb stay, but with the amenities of a luxury hotel. The concept originated in Italy in the 1980s and has since spread to other European countries, such as France and Switzerland, but we’re still waiting for it to touch down stateside.
Our Pick: Located in Santo Stefano di Sessanio, a historic southern Italian hill town surrounded by a perimeter wall, Sextantio Albergo Diffuso has its main hub in a castle watchtower and guest houses in the surrounding village.Back to top
