Car insurance hasn’t ever been a subject that sparks a lot of conversation, but maybe it should. Overpaying for car insurance is a common problem – but many drivers don’t even know that they’re doing it.

That’s no big surprise to those of us who dread paying our bills each month, but too few of us act on that information. Most states require car insurance, so it’s not like it’s an expense you can do without. And some insurance companies certainly don’t help matters. Sometimes it seems you can’t even see the playing field, much less determine whether it’s level or not.

Luckily, there’s a referee out there to help drivers navigate those rates. Aptly enough, it’s named The Zebra, and it’s an independent site that has been doing market research on the insurance industry since 2012. In that time, they’ve gathered information and spotted trends from a large number of providers.

What’s less well-known to industry outsiders is how they’ve leveraged all that knowledge. It turns out anyone can use The Zebra to compare rates among hundreds of major providers. All you have to do is enter your ZIP code, answer a few questions and voila: You’ll get an honest comparison of what providers in your area can offer you.

The process is as easy as it sounds, but it’s also hassle-free. You won’t need to give your phone number. You won’t need to pay a fee. If you did this same comparison the long way and entered your personal info on the individual insurers’ websites, the process would take all day — and you’d have piles of junk mail to deal with, even if you didn’t choose a provider.

The Zebra doesn’t buy or sell leads off this service, and they only show the carriers that can help you in their results. It’s basically like Priceline or Travelocity for car insurance, and it might just change the game for drivers in every state.

Curious about your own rates? Head to The Zebra and get a quick comparison.
