Renting a car has never been more affordable. “It’s kind of a race to the bottom right now in the rental car industry,” says Michael Goldman, president of AutoRentals.com, a site that lets users see all the fees that will accompany any rental car purchase. However, there’s a catch: “Often those with the lowest daily rates are those with the highest fees,” he adds. Get conned into even just one of the agency’s add-ons, and suddenly that cheap car isn’t so cheap anymore.
Even worse, the vast majority of these add-ons are bogus. Here’s how to tell whether the guy at the rental counter is actually giving you a good deal — or just blowing a bunch of smoke. Follow these rules, and you’ll never overpay for a set of wheels again.
