Prepare for Tolls
If you’re traveling anywhere with toll roads, rental car agencies are going to try and rent you an automated toll transponder. Goldman says rates are generally about $20 per day (not including tolls). If you’re only going to be there for a single day, renting may make sense. But if you’re going to be in an area for any longer, buy your own transponder. Florida’s SunPass, for example, is also $20 and can be picked up at most grocery stores.
Whatever you do though, don’t drive through automated tollbooths and assume the rental agency will pick up the tab. In 2011, a Seattle attorney found out the hard way that this isn’t how it works. Two $3 tolls were billed to her credit card, along with $100 in administrative fees. She launched a class action suit against Fox, which lowered its rates, but other companies still have similar charges.Back to top
