What do Boston, Berlin, New York City, London, Chicago, and Tokyo have in common? Outside of each being truly incredible cities, they also all host world-class marathons every year. We’re not exaggerating about the world-class part: These six marathons make up what’s known by runners around the world as the Abbott World Marathon Majors. They’re six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world. For elite runners, the selling point of tackling all six of these races is the chance to take home half a million dollars. For the rest of us, it’s more about just participating in these incredible race experiences (and, of course, for the bragging rights).
Feel inspired to take up marathon running? Whether you want to run one, all, or none of these epic races, you can garner some motivation to hit the pavement wherever you are by these six runners—one from each of the major marathon cities—who also happen to be Airbnb hosts. (Many of these guys host runners year-round and welcome marathoners! You can read more about how Airbnb is linked with the running community here.)
Use this gallery as you like—if you’re a runner, use it to discover the World Marathon Majors. If you’re a traveler, use it for the restaurant reccos and insider city tips. Running is an excellent way to explore a new city—regardless of whether or not you’re in said city to run a marathon (or any type of race for that matter.) That’s a concept these guys can relate with—they all enjoy taking their guests on running tours of their cities.
