Oversize luggage like golf clubs and surfboards can rack up big fees at the baggage check-in counter. Scott Keyes, co-founder of the discount-flight alert Scott’s Cheap Flights, offers tips for traveling on a budget.
“They allow two free checked bags, and that includes some larger items like skis,” says Keyes.
OUTSMART THE INDUSTRY
Scout your airline’s luggage policy online before you book. American Airlines, for instance, charges $150 to fly with a bike. JetBlue charges only $50. If you have to pay, pack in clothing and gear to avoid checking a second bag.
With UPS and FedEx, prices vary wildly depending on the item you’re shipping and how far it’s traveling. But it’s worth getting an estimate from your local branch.
