Southwest Airlines is offering $49 domestic flights from 86 U.S. cities this winter. The promotion ends this Thursday (October 15), and covers air travel from December 2 to 16, and January 5 through February 10, 2016. While the $49 flights don't extend from coast to coast, they accommodate regional trips, like Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Southwest is also offering longer flights for up to $149, which could take you from Washington D.C. to sunny San Diego. Of course, just because you can get a cheap ticket to Albany doesn't mean you should pack your bags. Here are our recommendations for where to fly, from the four largest U.S. cities.
From New York: Chicago (starting at $73)
Bundle up and explore the Chicago's eclectic neighborhoods via the expansive mass transit lines. Head to Uptown for bowl of pho or Peking duck, then hop on the Blue Line for a visit to Logan Square. The once-Scandinavian neighborhood (now hipster and Latino) is home to the award-winning Revolution Brewing and live blues at Rosa's Lounge. Read our Chicago travel guide.
From Los Angeles: Phoenix (starting at $49)
Grab a rental car and head just outside town for the 3 million acres of wilderness surrounding Phoenix. The hike up Camelback Mountain is a classic, but you can also head to Queen Creek Canyon for world-class rock climbing. Read our Phoenix travel guide.
From Chicago: Minneapolis (starting at $49)
Jump into Minneapolis's mix of charming high-low culture, where you can drain cans of Hamm's at Tony Jaros' River Garden Bar and catch a rock show at the Hexagon before retreating to the W Minneapolis and its 27th-floor cocktail lounge, Prohibition. Read our Minneapolis travel guide.
From Houston: Memphis (starting at $49)
Music fans get live blues, Sun Studios and Graceland — not to mention staples of the King's diet, like barbecue pizza. There are plenty of other gems though, like the Broad Avenue Arts District, where you can get an upscale grilled cheese at 3 Angels and a Sazerac alongside a dozen oysters at The Cove.
