The Chebeague Island Inn
This 21-room property is tucked away on Chebeague Island, located just 10 miles off the coast of Portland, Maine. According to local lore, an island resident by the name of Charlie frequented the inn’s bar during the early 1900s. One evening, after a quarrel with his wife, he checked into a room and set out to drink his worries away. After a couple rounds, he headed back to his room, but not before tossing a lit cigarette beneath the inn’s porch. A fire soon erupted, burning the property to the ground, and Charlie perished in the flames. His spirit reportedly still haunts the grounds, and the inn has kept his memory alive by renaming it “Charlie’s Bar” in his honor.
