Thor’s Well: Cape Perpetua, Oregon
There’s nothing like a giant hole in the sea to evoke swirling thoughts of Armageddon. Thor’s Well, located just off the coast of Cape Perpetua in Oregon, is more geologic wonder than symbol of impending doom. As ominous as it looks, the “hole” is actually a bowl, and only about 20 feet deep, carved out of the same basalt as the rest of the shoreline — in other words, it’s not draining anything. At high tide, waves roll in and fill the bowl from the bottom up, causing water to spray out the top, where it ends up flowing back in, creating the illusion that Thor’s Well is sucking down ocean water and funneling it into the underworld. At low tide, it’s more obvious that this is simply a bowl.
