Ride the world’s longest train tunnel to Lake Lucerne, Switzerland
Twenty-four years in the making, Switzerland finally opened the world’s longest train tunnel this December, slashing the travel time between Zurich and Milan by nearly an hour. The $12 billion Gotthard Base Tunnel cuts a 35-mile path through the Alps near the southern edge of Lake Lucerne and now welcomes 50 passenger trains daily. Of course, the region has much more to offer visitors this January than the chance to debut a marvel of modern engineering. You can enjoy the medieval charms of the city of Lucerne and then zip off to one of 24 nearby snow sports resorts accessible by train, mountain railway, PostBus, or boat.
