The Spot: Macaronis, a left-hand reef point located in Mentawai, Indonesia
Why It Matters: Mentawai is a three-island chain off the coast of Sumatra, where there’s a surf spot around nearly every bend. Though they are a popular surf destination, the Mentawais have largely retained their pristine character with white-sand beaches, perfect waves, and crystal-clear water. On bigger swells, Macaronis forms round wide-open barrels. On smaller days, it offers rippable ramps, and the wave is a regular in surf videos for its power and consistent shape. The top of the point is steep, fast, and more likely to barrel, while the inside section offers an invitation to shred. And yes, the wave’s shape does resemble a hollow noodle.
