7. Celebrate all things bourbon in Bardstown, Kentucky.
Want a good excuse to drink a ton of bourbon? Head to Bardstown, Kentucky, from September 12–18 for the 25th anniversary edition of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, where you can expect six full days of whiskey-slinging, meat-smoking, boot-scootin’ fun. Bardstown is about an hour south of Louisville and a great base for visiting five distilleries, including three on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail: Heaven Hill, Maker’s Mark, and Jim Beam. USA Today named Bardstown the “Most Beautiful Small Town in America,” and there are plenty of non-bourbon related activities like canoeing and golfing to keep you from going over the edge.
