Budget-friendly travel destinations are a must for backpackers hoping to become globetrotters (and everyday guys looking to take their family on vacation).
And while certain European cities seem untouchable because of their steep price tag and cost of living (looking at you, Geneva), there are plenty of hidden gems that offer breathtaking sites, lust-worthy lodgings, and irresistible fine dining at a fraction of the cost.
Recently, travel database site Price of Travel released the most affordable European cities to visit in 2018, according to the European Backpacker Index.
The index provides the total amount a traveler can expect to spend in a specific city on any given day. Experts factor in a night in the least expensive hostel located in a good location with good reviews; two public transportation rides per day; one famous attraction per day; and three realistic “budget” meals per day—along with three inexpensive local beers or wine.
Here are five European cities worth visiting in 2018, whether you’re backpacking alone, traveling with friends, or taking the whole family.
