There’s little that’s more American than the open road. Conveniently, the United States Department of Transportation has identified the nation’s best routes, thanks to the National Scenic Byways Program, which since 1991 has been officially recognizing and preserving American roads based on their historic and natural significance.
The program has selected 150 less-traveled, scenic, and nationally important stretches. Some cross the marshlands of South Carolina, others rise high through the Rockies, and all are worth driving. These are our top picks.
