Historic National Road
Where It Goes: The nation’s first federally funded highway, the National Road begins in Cumberland, Maryland, and stretches all the way to Vandalia, Illinois, crossing through West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. It goes by many different designations, including US 40 Scenic and the National Pike.
Length: 824 miles
Driving Time: 2-3 days
Where to Stop: While many byways here are excellent mainly for natural attractions, the National Road is special due to the amount of cities it connects. Visit downtown Cumberland, Maryland, to start your trip, and later pay a visit to Columbus, Ohio, to tour its famous Franklin Park Botanical Gardens. In Indianapolis, stop to peruse the Indiana Museum of Art or visit the Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.Back to top
