Where It Goes: The Volcanic Legacy Byway begins near Chemult, Oregon, traveling west on Oregon Route 138, then turning south and jumping along several routes across the California border. The route continues south until it loops around Lassen Peak, a stretch of road known as the Lassen Scenic Byway.

Where to Stop: Your first stop should be Crater Lake National Park in Oregon’s Klamath County; it’s the deepest lake in the country. Explore the lava caves at Lava Beds National Monument in Tuleklake, California. Continue on to Mount Shasta, a volcano in Siskiyou County that is considered potentially active.Back to top
