Camping is a great American pastime, no doubt. But the right way to camp is entirely up for debate. Some minimalists like to carry their shelter on their backs. Others prefer car camping—stowing their tents, stoves, and snacks just a stone’s throw away. And, if you’re more of a sleep-in-a-real-bed kind of person, there’s room for you, too, with glamping. No, it’s not the most dignified name, but it does have some major perks and runs across a spectrum, so it won’t be like posting up at the Ritz-Carlton smack-dab in the middle of nowhere.
Glamping sites across America let you, your family, and/or partner get out in nature without sacrificing luxury and comfort (namely: toilets and showers). Check out the 16 best glamping sites around the U.S. that are worthy of a visit.
1. Sandy Pines: Kennebunkport, Maine
Sandy Pines Campground, located at Goose Rocks Beach, offers traditional campsites so the experience feels a bit more rugged. (Though, yes, they still include a water hookup and a fire pit.) But their camping carriages will appeal to those who dig tiny retreats. Each 12 x 16 carriage is uniquely designed and comes with a massive king-sized bed and plush outdoor seating. Guests can also rent a more rugged “hideaway hut,” which is a smaller A-frame style: half canvas, half wood setup. There, you’ll still find a full-sized bed, solar lighting, and a firepit; you just have the added benefit of feeling closer to nature. Rates vary but start at $178 per night.
