9. Denmark
Everybody is familiar with Copenhagen, Denmark’s effortlessly cool capital, revered for its innovative culinary scene, sleek Scandinavian design, and iconic attractions—like Tivoli Gardens. But there’s so much more to Denmark beyond Copenhagen’s colorful, storybook charm. Take Jutland, for example. The peninsula is bounded by the North Sea to the west, the Skagerrak to the north, Kattegat and Baltic Sea to the east, and Germany to the south. Here, intrepid travelers will find an intriguing terrain made up of rambling heaths, rolling hills, and peat bogs. Down on the west coast, Klitmøller has been affectionately dubbed “the cold Hawaii” due to its wide array of watersports and reputation as one of Europe’s top windsurfing destinations. Mountain biking has also been gaining popularity thanks to a series of cycling routes that have opened over the past few years through Thy National Park. But one of the most unique experiences is participating in an oyster safari in the Wadden Sea (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) led by experts from The Wadden Sea Centre. While in the region, pay a visit to Ribe, Denmark’s oldest town, which began as a Viking marketplace back in 700 A.D.
